Blackpool remain unbeaten in January after playing out a 1-1 draw at home to Carlisle United.

The Blackpool goal came from Arnold Matshazi, who found the top corner of the net with a fine finish.

Carlisle came to Lancashire hoping to remain top of the EFL Youth Alliance with a win away against the Seasiders.

However, John Murphy fielded a mostly young team, with some players in the ranks having not played too many games at this level yet.

With the likes of Jack Moore and Tayt Trusty out on loan, it gave players like Kwaku Donkor and Zack Littler the chance to step up in the starting line-up.

Blackpool began playing out from the back, using the midfield to create some chances for Matshazi, who partnered Jake Daniels up front.

In the eighth minute, the Cumbrians nearly took the lead – they would have done had it have not been for Donkor’s intervention when the visitors were in on goal.

The Blackpool wingers, Dannen Francis and James Harrison were looking to be heavy influencers in the game and Francis was testing the Carlisle left-back early with his tricky footwork.

As Francis worked his way down the right flank, Joe Strawn’s shot was fired straight at the away goalkeeper, in the first real clear-cut chance of the game.

Archie Cunningham, who was starting in goal in place of Alec McLachlan who recently signed for Squires Gate on loan, was commanding his area well and was involved in a chance for Blackpool in the 27th minute.

Some nice work in his six-yard area, his stretched pass found Daniels who had a shot which was a comfortable enough save for the man in the Carlisle goal.

As Donkor was linking up well with Francis on the right, the way the away side were playing, sometimes left him stretched and when running back to defend, he collided with an oncoming attacker and the Blackpool right-back received treatment and continued to play on afterwards.

As Blackpool got a bit of a foothold in the game after Carlisle looked somewhat dangerous, the deadlock was broken. The ball was passed into Matshazi’s feet and while being tightly marked, he managed to get a shot off and finish perfectly in the top corner.

That goal spurred Blackpool on and they continued to play well on the approach to half-time. Harrison had a chance when he was through on goal, but he couldn’t quite get a shot off.

On the referee’s whistle, a Carlisle man got loose and had a shot which was fired over Cunningham’s goal.

Half-Time: Blackpool 1 Carlisle United 0

Two minutes into the second half, Carlisle hit the bar and the intent from the visitors to get into the game was clearly there.

The second half began with quite a high tempo from both teams and in the 56th minute, Blackpool thought they had doubled their lead when they had the ball in the back of the net, only for it to be given for offside.

Carlisle had been threatening most the game, as well as the Seasiders, as both sides had many chances but so far it had been the Matshazi goal which was separating the two teams.

After a mishap in the Blackpool defence however, Carlisle were in on goal but Tyler Hill did similar as Donkor in the first half where he intervened and came up with a goal-saving challenge.

Blackpool were unlucky not to be two up, Strawn had a second effort, like his first half attempt on goal.

Hill had been impressive in defence for most of the game, saved a goal midway through the second half but he was the player who gave away a penalty in the 72nd minute.

The penalty was scored, and Carlisle had dragged themselves level after being given a lifeline.

In the final ten minutes of the game, it was clear Carlisle weren’t settling for the draw, they were going for a winner. As were the home team and there was a bundle of chances late on.

Substituted on for Matshazi, Johnny Johnston was in on goal and his shot was agonisingly wide. That effort would have seen the young Seasiders regain the lead.

Carlisle’s penalty cancelled out the first half opener from Blackpool and the points were shared at Myerscough.
